Winter River
Description
1980, oil on cardboard, 74x93 cm (with frame 78x97x2 cm) /// Edgars Vinters (1919–2014) – one of the representatives of plein-air painting in Latvia in the second half of the 20th century. The painting “Winter River” depicts a calm winter landscape with a partially frozen stream, in whose surface the trunks of trees and the winter light are reflected. The composition is defined by a subtle balance between the coolness of the snow-covered banks and the dark, vibrant reflections of the water. Vinters employs a free, impasto brushstroke to model the texture of the snow and the rhythm of the branching trees, lending the landscape a sense of movement and the vibration of light. The work conveys the artist’s characteristic plein-air sensibility – direct observation of nature and a nuanced perception of light – evoking the atmosphere of crisp winter air. /// The artist’s signature and date are located on the lower right side.
