Sloka

1989, oil on canvas, 81x100 cm (with frame 83,5x102,5x3,5 cm) /// Valdis Bušs (1924–2014) is one of the most prominent and expressive Latvian landscape painters, celebrated for his rich use of colour and distinctive, dynamic approach. The artwork was painted in the late 1980s. The artist focused on the already well-known and beloved theme of the Jūrmala area and specifically Sloka. However, unlike the previous 70s period, when the framing of the specific place and street observation dominated the compositions, a slightly different approach can be felt in this work. The view of Sloka has acquired a more panoramic outline of the city scene, highlighting the stylization of forms and two-dimensionality. Increased colour expression and contrasts. The shapes are designed with individual brushstrokes. /// The artist's signature and date are on the lower left side of the painting.
