White Flowers
Description
1999, oil on canvas, 70x90 cm (with frame 72,5x92,5x3,5 cm) /// Valdis Bušs (1924–2014) is one of the most vivid and expressive Latvian colourists. His works stand out for their rich colour palette and individual, dynamic approach. In addition to countless landscapes painted en plein air, the artist also depicted flowers, often incorporating elements of still life. The still life composition was created in the late 1990s. The central motif is white flowers arranged in a vase, complemented by a book and fruits in the foreground of the painting. An angle from above has been chosen for the depiction, and the objects are close to the plane of the painting, thus giving the classic still-life setting an unusual and original point of view. The shapes are created with thick paint strokes, enhancing their volume and giving the texture expressiveness. The vivid colour and its contrasts are used as a means of artistic expression and manner, which creates the unique atmosphere of the painting. /// The artist’s signature and date are on the lower right side of the painting. The artwork is reproduced in the e-book “On the Bright Side of Life. Valdis Bušs” and in both the e-book and physical book “Krāsa un gaisma. Valdis Bušs,” authors: Līga Baņķiere and Ieva Trillo, published by LLC Art Platz, Riga, 2024.
