Description

2021, acrylic, oil on canvas, 150x100 cm /// Dmitrijs Lavrentjevs (1970) is a contemporary artist who works in various genres of visual art. He has organized 26 solo exhibitions and participated in 100 group shows. His works in public collections: Minsk Modern and Contemporary Art Center (Minsk, Belarus), the Vitebsk Museum of Modern Art (Vitebsk, Belarus), and the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center (Daugavpils, Latvia). Lavretjevs shares a special connection with 20th-century art, an endless source of inspiration and self-expression. The artist’s works are characterized by their unusual eccentricity, vivid colours, and emotionality. Sharp and expressive lines, loose brushstrokes, and seemingly distorted shapes constitute the essential elements that define his unique creative style. Lavrentjev’s art is rich in symbolism and archetypal images. The painting “Faust” refers to a play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe of the same title, which depicts the story of the ambitious Faust – a scientist who deals with the devil to gain knowledge and the pleasures of life. The play is considered a masterpiece of German classical literature, significantly influencing Western Europe’s culture. The painting “Faust” is one of the works created for the artist’s solo exhibition “Apocalypse” (2023). /// The artist’s signature and the date are on the lower left.
