In Talsi
Description
Oil on cardboard, 75x85 cm (with frame 77,5x87,5x3,5 cm), 1988 /// Valdis Bušs (1924-2014) was a prominent representative of Latvian modern painting in the 20th century, known for his expressive style. His works are characterized by bright, vibrant colours and the virtuosity of his brush strokes. The painting “In Talsi” is from the late 1980s - when the artist slightly changed his style, emphasizing broad areas of colour and their dynamics rather than texture. In this painting, the artist made striking use of colour contrast, juxtaposing orange and yellow with blues of varying intensity. He played very delicately with shades of orange, which appear on the house wall on the right, in the corner of the adjoining house, and in combination with other colours on the ground. The artist seems to have portrayed himself working in plein air; if we look carefully, we can find the painter’s figure in the centre of the painting. The artist’s signature and date are on the lower left. The artwork is reproduced in the e-book “On the Bright Side of Life. Valdis Bušs” and in both the e-book and physical book “Krāsa un gaisma. Valdis Bušs,” authored by Līga Baņķiere and Ieva Trillo, published by LLC Art Platz, Riga, 2024.
