Ships in the Evening Sun
Description
1979, oil on cardboard, 85,5x100,5 cm (with frame 88x103x3,5 cm) /// "Valdis Bušs (1924–2014) is one of the most vivid and expressive Latvian landscape painters. His works are distinguished by a rich colour palette and an individual, dynamic approach. The panoramic composition “Ships in the Evening Sun” radiates a sense of tension, revealed both through mood and brushwork. The foreground occupies the majority of the canvas, with colour applied in broad fields. On the water’s surface, reflecting the sky, white and pink tones interact, contrasting with darker brushstrokes. This painting is an example of Bušs’ stylistic signature, characteristic of the late 1970s. The painting is reproduced in the e-book “On the Bright Side of Life. Valdis Bušs” and in both the e-book and physical book “Krāsa un gaisma. Valdis Bušs”, authors: Līga Baņķiere and Ieva Trillo, published by LLC Art Platz, Riga, 2024. /// The artist’s signature and date are located on the lower left.
