Fisherman by the River

Description

Around 1970, oil on canvas, 74x92 cm ( with frame 77x95x2 cm) /// This early work by Latvian painter Valdis Bušs (1924–2014) reflects his exploration of colour, light, and structure within the landscape genre. The painting style shows reminiscences of the Post-Impressionist movement, with expressive brushwork and the technique of applying colour. “Fisherman by the River” captures a tranquil riverside scene – modest village houses, tall autumnal trees, and the solitary figure of a fisherman merging into the rhythm of nature. Bušs uses bold colour and thick impasto to create reflections on the water and convey the warmth of a late-afternoon glow. The composition balances human stillness with the vibrant texture of the environment, revealing the artist’s interest in the emotional atmosphere of the landscape, rather than pure realism. The painting is reproduced in the e-book “On the Bright Side of Life. Valdis Bušs” and in both the e-book and physical book “Krāsa un gaisma. Valdis Bušs”, authors: Līga Baņķiere and Ieva Trillo, published by LLC Art Platz, Riga, 2024. /// The artist's signature is located on the lower left side of the painting.
