The Pier at Lapmežciems
Description
2016, oil on canvas, 60x80 cm (with frame 66x86x1,5 cm) /// Andis Gūtmanis (1968) is a Latvian painter and interior designer whose work is characterised by maritime subjects, coastal landscapes, and motifs of fishing villages. In this painting, the artist depicts the weathered piles of an old pier extending into the sea, forming the principal axis of the composition and leading the viewer’s gaze towards the horizon. A restrained palette of bluish-grey and greenish tones emphasises the tranquillity of the coast and its sense of openness. At the same time, the rocks in the foreground lend the composition depth and spatiality. The free, impasto brushwork and the subtle interplay of light and shadow imbue the work with a natural quality, capturing the distinctive atmosphere of the Latvian coastline. /// The artist’s signature is located in the lower right corner of the painting.
