Improvisation with Sails
Description
1976–1978, oil on cardboard, 36x44 cm (with frame 60x67x2 cm) /// Jānis Pauļuks (1906–1984) was one of the most distinctive and prominent figures in Latvian painting of the second half of the 20th century. His style is characterised by expressive brushwork, vivid colour, and a free approach to form. In this work, the motif of the sea and sailing boats becomes a dynamic composition of colour and form, in which dark, undulating areas of water contrast with vivid red and yellow sails. Broad, rhythmic brushstrokes create a sense of movement and intensify the energy of the painting, emphasising the intensity, rhythm, and dynamism of the colours. /// The artist’s signature is located along the left edge of the painting.
