Fishing Nets

1965, oil on cardboard, 32,5x50 cm (with frame 43x61x4 cm) /// Jūlijs Viļumanis (1909–1981) was one of the representatives of Latvian painting in the mid-twentieth century. Landscape occupies an important place in his oeuvre, particularly coastal scenes and motifs depicting the life of fishing communities. The painting depicts a coastal landscape with boats drawn ashore, fishermen’s buildings, and fishing-net structures, capturing the simple rhythm of the everyday life of fishermen. Expressive blue and bluish-grey tones in the sky are contrasted with warm browns and ochres, creating a distinctive coastal atmosphere. Free, rhythmic brushstrokes lend the landscape a sense of movement and vitality, highlighting the artist’s characteristic painterly style. /// The artist’s signature and date are located in the lower left corner of the painting.
