About the Rabbit

Description

1989-1990,tempera, watercolour on paper, 27,4x19,5 cm /// Kārlis Dobrājs (1943) is one of the classics of Latvian painting. The series of drawings was commissioned for the book “Vēja Vanadziņš” (“Windy Accipiter”, 1993). It compiles a selection of artistic representations of Latvian legends and tales, with a visually depicted narrative of the stories themselves. The coloured hand-drawn illustrations are original works, with each being a one-of-a-kind piece. The animals depicted in the illustration - birds and rabbit - are the main characters in the legend. The rabbit was so cunning that he managed to put all of the birds in the basket and close the lid. Then the rabbit brought the basket to God, and God was afraid that the rabbit would trick the whole world with his deception, so he took it away from the rabbit. That's why the rabbit has become so scared - because he doesn't want anything to be taken away.
